One of the main events of the Corn and Apple Festival is aiming to get bigger and better this summer.

A new location is among a few of the changes already in the works for the 2010 Manitoba Open Barbecue Championship.

"We have made some significant improvements to the event," suggested organizer Perry Hopkins, who noted the changes begin with the Morden Corn & Apple Festival taking over the financial reigns of the event.

"This is a big bonus for our sponsors as it will give much better exposure throughout the entire festival and will allow our committee to concentrate on putting on a great event."

And the changes to the event itself include having it now sanctioned under the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which is the one of the world's largest barbeque associations.

Hopkins said he believes the Morden event will be the first KCBS competition in North America sanctioned outside the United States.

"I think it will help to raise the competitive bar and no doubt bring in even more competition from our neighbours to the south."

Hopkins feels they have also dramatically improved on the competition site by moving it to the Lake Minnewasta campgrounds.

"This new location will give us the space and infrastructure we need to make our competitors very comfortable, no matter what the size of rig they bring," he said.

"And we are also offering the opportunity for competitors with government approved mobile kitchens to sell to the public from these sites, but you must be pre-approved to do so."

As well, the prize money for the event has been increased to include as well from the first to tenth place teams in all four meat categories.

The grand champion will also receive an automatic invitation (American or Canadian team) to compete in the prestigious Jack Daniels and American Royal competitions in the United States.

Be a BBQ judge

And another new addition to the event will be the opportunity for participants to qualify as judges.

It will be a one-time opportunity for all interested in barbeque to take part in a KCBS barbeque judge's course on Saturday, August 28 at the competition site.

"This will give competitors and wanna-be judges an insight into what makes great competition barbeque and prepare them for the next day's competition," said Hopkins.

The completion of the course gives each participant an official Competition BBQ Judge ranking which can be used to judge at any KCBS events as well as a one year membership to the KCBS.
