Jake Heppner beat Ronn Smith by four votes to become the R.M. of Rhineland councillor in Ward 5.

Jake Heppner is the new Ward 5 councillor in the R.M. of Rhineland after narrowly defeating his closest challenger by only four votes.

Heppner received 77 votes, while runner-up, Ronn Smith earned 73.

Victor Rupps earned 46 votes while Mike Toews received 25. Heppner's main support came in the Altona area, where he had 43 votes compared to 26 for Smith.

In Rosenfeld, Heppner was actually a distant third with 29. Ronn Smith earned 46 while Victor Rupps had 44.

A total of 221 voters came out, representing 33 per cent of eligible voters.

Heppner said he was surprised by his victory. "I wasn't expecting to get in," he said. "I'm humbled by it too."

Because there were four candidates, Heppner said he knew there would be vote splitting, he just didn't know which way it would go. "I had a feeling it could be close, but you don't really know," he said.

Although Heppner is excited to get to work, he admitted not all parts of the campaign had him in his comfort zone.

"In the debate, the opening and closing you could prepare for but the questions from the floor you couldn't," he said. "I was rather nervous."

Heppner said he appreciates those who came out to the polls to vote for him.

"I'm thankful for all the support," he said.
