Big Top circus coming this weekend 0
For many, a favourite childhood memory is the day the circus came to town.
Although it's been many years since Winkler has seen a travelling circus, this weekend will finally see the return of the big top.
The Family Fun Circus from Sarasota, Florida is touring parts of Canada this summer and will make stops in southern Manitoba and the northern U.S. over the next few weeks.
A family-owned European-style circus, this show features one-ring with close seating for all. There are clowns, jugglers, acrobats, trick-riders, and aerialists plus lots of circus food like cotton candy, popcorn and hot dogs.
The circus has been a tradition in North America since the 1820s and the traveling circus evolved with the quick growth of the United States.
New immigrants to the U.S. and Canada included circus performers from Europe. Looking to make a living the only way they knew how, they banded together into traveling shows and visited small communities which were too small to sustain long-term circuses.
These showmen had to travel fast and light to find an audience and thus began a tradition that still exists today.
The Family Fun Circus is such a circus, family -owned, with a multi-generational cast.
The shows in Winkler are being presented by the Stanley Agricultural Society. Shows will take place on the Ag Grounds on Grandeur Avenue on Friday, July 20 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 21 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at Canadian Lumber in Winkler. A $10 ticket covers the cost of an adult, plus two children under the age of 14. Walk-ups at the site will pay $20 for adults and $10 for children under 14.
And remember to get there early to watch the tent go up!
