Storm win; Hurricanes tie 0
The South Central Hurricanes lost a tough match to the seventh place BA United in Winkler Sunday. With the 2-0 loss, the Canes currently sit in fifth place with 17 points in the second division of the Winnipeg Women s Soccer League. Earlier in the week, they lost 2-0 to the first place Victorious Secret after having played the eighth place Chicas to a scoreless draw July 16. They visit the second place FCNW Titans Thursday (August 2) then host the Ice in Winkler August 8.
The Winkler Storm scored a late goal to break a scoreless tie Sunday and earn their second win of the season in the Manitoba Major Soccer League premier second division.
And the South Central Hurricanes maintained their hold on fourth place in the Winnipeg Womens Soccer League with a win and a tie this past week.
The Storm beat the sixth place Winnipeg Kiev 1-0 August 12 to improve their record to two wins, nine losses and three ties for 10 points.
It lifted the Storm out of the cellar into ninth place - one point ahead of Internazionale and two back of Lions FC.
The Storm played against a strong headwind in the first half.
Niko Nickel was denied a breakaway opportunity early on, and the teams traded several chances but the game remained scoreless at the half.
In the second half, the storm took control of the game with the wind at their backs and created several excellent scoring opportunities.
Paul Gruen hit the crossbar on a shot from 25 yards out with 15 minutes remaining, and keeper Waldi Friebus made a key breakaway save for the Storm to keep the score even.
Then in the 91st minute, Niko Nickel converted and beat the keeper to take the lead and win.
The Storm next face a tough task in facing Bonivital United Friday (August 17). Bonivital holds first place at 10-2-1 for 31 points. The Storm then have home games against the 7th place Dynamo FC Sunday (August 19) and Internazionale Tuesday (August 21).
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes followed up a 4-0 shutout of the ninth place Ice last Wednesday (August 8) by fighting to a 3-3 tie with the third place Pirates Sunday (August 12).
The Hurricanes are at six wins, three losses and four ties for 21 points and are seven back of the Pirates and two in front of the Classics in the second division.
After facing the last place Top Totties Wednesday (August 15), they have two games back in Winkler Monday (August 20) against the 7th place BA United and Wednesday (August 22) against the Pirates.
