Maroons take on Mercs Friday March 15

The Altona Maroons will take on the Warren Mercs in the final round of the SEMHL playoffs, beginning Friday, March 15 in Altona.

The Maroons advanced to the SEMHL finals after beating the Stonewall Flyers 6-1 on March 9.

It was fan appreciation night at the MEC, but it was pretty clear the fans appreciated the team as well, as the Maroons worked their way to victory.

Matt Dyck scored the lone first period goal, and in the second added one more as well as teammates Devon Leblanc and Angus Klassen. Mike Friesen and Jared Barnabe scored in the third, with only one Stonewall shot getting by Altona’s goalie.

Coach Rob Friesen said losing the first game of the series 3-2 was due to lack of action thanks to finishing first and getting a first round bye.

“The layoff killed us, having 19 days off,” he said.

Focusing on discipline on the ice and making some adjustments to special teams made the difference as the Maroons notched four straight wins, 7-1, 5-4, 4-1 and 6-1.

Friesen admits the Mercs are a tough team, but he’s confident the Maroons can beat them.

But on paper, it looks like a big task.

In fact a mid-season 8-4 game was the only one the Maroons claimed victory. They lost 6-5 in a shootout and also suffered a 3-1 loss the last time the two teams faced each other. Over the three games the Maroons outscored them 14-13.

Warren finished second in regular season play.
