Cougars earn Zone 4 accolades

The Carman Cougars recorded both a win and a loss over the past week, but local players also earned league recognition for their skills.

Two Cougars were named top Zone 4 players for Week 3 of the regular season. Alex Clemis was named Goalie of the Week and Eric Klassen was named Skater of the Week.

The honours were announced Monday afternoon, following the Cougars’ Nov. 1 victory, but before their Nov. 6 defeat.

Nov. 1 win

On Nov. 1, the Cougars faced off against the Miller Aces in Carman. The Aces fought hard, forcing tied periods in the first and second, but the Cougars managed to gain the upper hand in the third.

Going into the last period even at 4 goals each, the Carman team scored three more to end the game at 7-4.

Sam Sullivan, Eric Klassen, Marr Durand, Campbell Ens, Dylan McLaren, Colby Heaman and Tyler Park each scored for the Cougars.

Alex Clemis made 42 saves during the 60-minute game.

Nov. 6 loss

The Aces bounced back Monday night, using home ice advantage to take the lead early - and then stretch it to a 9-1 triumph.

The Altona-based team put six points on the board in the first period, adding another three in the second. Although Aidan Swark managed to score a late goal for Carman, it wasn’t enough to stem the tide.

Cougars goalies Kaden Hiebert and Alex Clemis shared the net, with Hiebert allowing six goals (and stopping ten) in the first 20 minutes, and Clemis allowing three (and stopping 18) in the last two periods.

The Carman Cougars were scheduled to play the Pembina Tigers on Carman ice on Wednesday.

The Cougars will host the Morris Mavericks next on Monday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
