Comedy Night raises funds for mission trip

WINKLER -

A special Comedy Night Fundraiser featuring Matt Falk and a meal by Flavors of Mexico, will help launch a Winkler youth group’s mission trip to Nicaragua.
The event takes place May 12 at the EMMC.
EMMC Pastor Tim Goertzen said this will be the third time a youth group from their church has gone to Nicaragua, the others in 2013 and 2015.
It was while visiting with a friend in 2011, who had been adopted from a Nicaragua orphanage, that Goertzen first saw the possibilities.
“I saw the mission that was there and the need that was there,” he said.
The group, made up of 27 youth and about eight leaders will spend the first two weeks of July on the trip, staying in an orphanage with the children as they work on necessary projects.
They’ll also take part in Bible training and will spend time with people living at the dump.
“We bring a nice meal to them and just interact with the kids at the dump,” he said.
Goertzen said it’s an eye opening experience for local youth and helps expand their world view.
“They realize the humanity of people around the world,” he said. “They realize, we’ve got it pretty easy and there are people that need our help around the world.”
This experience can also help shape their lives.
“Part of my goal for our kids on a missions trip is to give them the experience of trying to help people and wanting to do missions as they carry on into adulthood,” he said.
The Comedy Night Fundraiser featuring comedian Matt Falk takes place May 12. Doors open at 5:30 with dinner beginning at 6 p.m.
Flavors of Mexico will prepare a three course Mexican meal.
Entrance is by donation (which is receiptable) and all funds support the Youth Nicaragua Mission Trip.
