Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard in "Allied."

Brad Pitt a dismal bore in 'Allied'

Allied, Robert Zemeckis’ World War II spy thriller and romance is a bitter disappointment. I blame Zemeckis, as the director, and Brad Pitt, as the leading man. Pitt is deadly dull as the hero and Zemeckis is under the misguided impression that Pitt does some of the finest work of his career.

Billy Bob Thornton stars as Willie Soke in "Bad Santa 2."

Billy Bob's Bad Santa 2' total B.S.

I love the real people involved in Bad Santa 2, especially when Kathy Bates shows up as the tattooed biker broad who happens to be Billy Bob Thornton’s mega-mean mama.

Brett Kelly stars as Thurman Merman and Billy Bob Thornton as Willie Soke in "Bad Santa 2."

‘Bad Santa 2’ stars talk about Christmas

Bad Santa 2, like its raunchy, profane and absolutely insane original from 13 years ago, puts the boots to political correctness. This disjointed movie franchise is the antidote to the idea of Christmas as a family-friendly time of celebration.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

'Billy Lynn' an ambitious mess

Ang Lee’s latest film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk makes me want to read the war-and-patriotism satirical novel by Ben Fountain it’s based on – just to see what I may have missed.

Amy Adams in "Nocturnal Animals."

'Nocturnal' the feel-bad movie of the year

Many filmmakers have been accused of “style over substance.” Tom Ford – who is also a billion-dollar fashion mogul – would seem a particularly vulnerable target with his film Nocturnal Animals.

Eddie Redmayne in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Redmayne, Yates talk ‘Fantastic Beasts’

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is as close to a sure thing for the 2016 holiday movie season as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the case of Fantastic Beasts, the reason is just as obvious: This is another wizarding world tale conjured by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, one of the planet’s most beloved novelists.

Clockwise from top: "Assassin’s Creed," "Moana," "Fantastic Beasts" and Where to Find Them" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Holiday movie preview 2016

The holiday season is critical in North America, so Hollywood is happy to give audiences what filmmakers think they want. Here are the 10 biggest titles being offered from now through the end of December:

'Hacksaw Ridge' a stirring war epic

This just in: War is still hell. Faith and fighting — two of Mel Gibson’s biggest obsessions — are at the heart of his excellent new movie, Hacksaw Ridge. It’s a war movie about a pacifist.
